Why are my teeth stained?

Your tooth enamel is like your fingerprints — no two people have the same shade of tooth enamel. Some are darker than others, some is more yellow. Some teeth are simply more prone to staining than others. There are two types of staining: stains on the enamel of the tooth and stains on the interior of the tooth, the dentin. Teeth whitening programs address staining on the enamel, attempting to get your teeth back to your original natural color. Whitening, despite what you may hear, doesn’t address staining from drug reactions such as tetracycline that make the interior of the tooth grey. The only way to address this type of staining is through the application of porcelain veneers over the fronts of the teeth.

Your enamel becomes stained usually from the foods and drinks we consume: red wine, coffee, tea, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cola drinks, and even dark chocolate. The natural pigments in these foods and drinks penetrate the enamel and leave a stain.

How does teeth whitening remove those stains?

Whitening seeks to remove the stains on your enamel to return your teeth to the color they started with. The way they do this is similar to the way laundry detergent gets stains out of a shirt. The bleaching agent, in our home whitening, is it carbamide peroxide penetrates the enamel of your teeth and breaks down the stains, which are then washed away.

Our in-home whitening

At Dr. Steier’s we offer professional at-home whitening. We start by taking impressions of your teeth, which we use to create custom trays for your upper and lower teeth. Our custom trays provide a snug fit (unlike over the counter one-size-fits-all trays), ensuring the whitening gel makes excellent contact with your teeth. We then provide you with syringes filled with our professional-strength carbamide whitening gel. The strength of this gel can be varied to account for extra tooth sensitivity or extra staining.

At home, you fill your custom trays with the whitening gel we provide. Then you wear the trays for 30 minutes to one hour every day for one to two weeks. Your teeth will become several shades whiter, giving you something to smile about.
